কারবালার যুদ্ধ ইসলামিক পঞ্জিকা অনুসারে ১০ মুহাররম ৬১ হিজরী মোতাবেক ১০ অক্টোবর ৬৮০ খ্রিষ্টাব্দ বর্তমান ইরাকের কারবালা নামক প্রান্তরে সংগঠিত হয়েছিল। এই যুদ্ধটি ইসলামের নবী মুহাম্মদ (স) এর নাতি হোসাইন ইবন আলী এর অল্প কিছু সমর্থক-আত্মীয় এবং উমাইয়া খলিফা প্রথম ইয়াজিদ, যার বৈশ্যতা স্বীকার করতে হোসাইন অস্বীকার করেন, তার বিশাল সেনাবাহিনীর মধ্যে সংগঠিত হয়। এই যুদ্ধে হোসাইন এবং তার ছয় মাস বয়সী শিশুপুত্র আলী আল-আসগর ইবন হোসেইনসহ সকল সমর্থক নিহত হয় ও নারী এবং শিশুরা বন্দি হন। মুসলমানদের মতানুসারে নিহতদের সকলে ‘শহীদ’ হিসেবে অভিহিত হন এবং এই যুদ্ধ শিয়া মতাবলম্বীদের ইতিহাস ও ঐতিহ্যের কেন্দ্রস্থলে অবস্থান করে।
